Rome if you want to...
Thursday, we did ancient Rome.
The intention was always that Mum and Daddy wouldn't come on this section. We had originally intended to do a bus tour, but since they couldn't go at all, we hit it on foot.
It was a whirlwind trip, especially after last night's blitz through the modern day tourist traps. Everyone warns you to buy tickets ahead of time because otherwise the lines will be too long. Apparently everyone is too busy gawking at St. Peters because the Forum did not have a line and the Colosseum's line was about 10 people long. (Good thing too, because the website didn't believe us when we said we had five children so it forced us to wait in line anyways.)

They were happy and perky at the beginning of the day - our first look at the Forum ruins
The sun was bright and they did NOT want to smile for the camera.
Why walk when you have a big sister?
The Vestal Virgins
I love that my kids get excited about seeing Julius Caesar's funeral pyre.
The grandeur that was Rome.
Caesar(s) make a choice.
We were hoping to do some fun photo ops of them standing on some of the rocks pretending to be statues.
But the guard got mad at us. He tweeted his whistle. I had flashbacks to elementary school lunch ladies.
Why the nice guy didn't point out that Gabbie was separated from the rest of us, I don't know.
It was a long day. They're less enthusiastic and perky at this point.
Since we were all feeling alert and alive, we decided to walk to St. John Lateran, the actual cathedral over which the Pope presides. (St. Peter's is just a fancy showpiece. ;-) )
Ex Cathedra. The Chair of Peter.
Dinner and then collapse.
