May the Divine Assistance Protect You

Jonathan's shoe tying ability is about what could be expected from a 6 year old boy. However, he is very distressed when his laces come undone and will not be settled down until they are properly fixed. This is why elastic laced shoes were invented.

His black dress shoes have the impossible to keep tied variety of laces. No matter if we double or triple knot it, tuck the ends inside his shoes, or force him to sit still the entire time he's wearing them, it's all to no avail. They always, always, ALWAYS come undone. Thankfully they are short enough that they won't really trip him up.

One particular Sunday, they offending laces came untied just as we began to walk up to receive Communion. He kept looking down at it, trying not to stand on it or walk on it or otherwise even touch it. Had I allowed him, he would have stopped in the middle of line to fix it. Our wonderful, kind, and caring deacon saw him hobbling up and was concerned for him and wanted to point it out to him. He unfortunately had a significant non-pause and when Jonathan walked up, Deacon Dennis said,

"May the Lord bless you and keep you and tie your shoes"

....lest you dash your foot against a stone.

Okay, so I know that I brag too much about Rebecca and that an awful lot of people think that I exaggerate her abilities........... We started school with her this year. An hour of calendar, practicing letters, reading a little bit about science or history, and then letting her read to me. We were running late on Thursday, so I was still praying when 9:00 came and Rebecca wanted to start school. I offered that she could sit with me while I said the Divine Office. While we were driving yesterday, Rebecca interrupted Steven and I and asked "Excuse me. May I please have permission to talk out loud?" (Let me note that this is not something that she regularly asks or that either of us has ever said. No clue where she got that idea. So we happily gave her permission.) "I would like to talk to you about colors" As this is the first line of conversation when she wants a "talk-over" and it begins to get stale, we declined the opportunity. "How about shapes?"
