Love is colorblind

Many people have asked rude and offensive questions of our children when they hear that we are in the midst of the adoption process. They've been asked if they'll be upset about having to share with "other kids", what they think about having strange children move in with us, and if they will love the new kids as much as their "real" brother/sister.

Thankfully, Rebecca and Jonathan are both over the moon excited about bringing Mattaniah and Selah (not their real names) home and we warned them that people might not understand and might - intentionally or not - say unkind things. We also gave them tools to respond to such comments. My personal favorite is Rebecca's response in drippingly polite tones: "Excuse me. I thought you just said something rather rude about my brothers and sisters. I must have misunderstood you!"

I didn't realize just how oblivious they are to the genetic differential until Rebecca came to me after getting off the phone with her friend Josie. As a backstory: Josie is from a family of middle-European ancestry. Her two younger brothers have blong hair and fair skin. Josie, on the other hand, is quite obviously genetically Chinese.

So Rebecca got off the phone with Josie and came running up to me, excited beyond belief.

"MOMMY! DID YOU KNOW THAT JOSIE WAS ADOPTED??????"

Jesus loves the little children. Just end the song there.
