Bloodthirsty Barbarians
Another story that was never posted:
While in CA, I met up with a good friend for coffee. As we were chatting and the kids were playing, she confessed that she was a little concerned about her three year old son's tendency towards violence in his playing. "He always seems to be making things crash or explode. Is this normal?" Literally as she finished this sentence, Jonathan walked up to us with a small Donald Duck and Minnie Mouse toy. "Do you know what Minnie's doing, Mommy? She's SMASHING his beak and then BITING it off!!!!!!!!!!" (insert maniacal laughter here)
At least she was reassured about her son's behavior.

More barbarism:
Tomorrow being the feast of All Saints, our parish invited all the children to dress up as their favorite saint for daily Mass. Rebecca, of course, wanted to be a queen saint. It was a toss up between St. Elisabeth of Hungary, St. Hedwig, and St. Agnes of Bohemia (whom Sr. Agnes Regina is named for) Agnes did end up winning out.
Jonathan wanted to be a soldier. Not a "killing person" (like St. Michael or St. George) but a "real soldier" After much discussion of various military saints, Martin of Tours barely beat our St. Demetrius. However, in these discussions, St. Lawrence came up. Rebecca told the story with no hesitation nor any squeamishness in telling the tale. Jonathan, on the other hand, seemed rather upset by the story. Several hours later, I heard him muttering while playing, "You don't roast them while they're alive. You wait till they're dead to eat them! That's just WRONG!!!"
Got it: Slaughter's okay, but cannibalism's right out. I'll remember that.
